Several courses will be offered as part of the Pre-Grad Program:

1) Biosci 54/55, a two-quarter lecture/lab series, in which students will get to do real experiments, at the leading edge of a field of research, with modern technology. These courses will focus on integrating genetics, genomics, computation and advanced imaging to address fundamental biological problems. Biosci 54/55 substitutes for Biosci 44 X/Y.

2) Biosci 103, a Frontiers in Research course which is linked to the Biological Sciences Department seminar series.

Biosci 54/55

Biosci 54/55 will be offered Winter/Spring quarters of the 2005-2006 academic year. See the Courses and Degrees descriptions for Biosci 54 and 55.

Enrollment in Biosci 54/55 will be limited to 18 students, with preference to sophomores. Students are expected to take 54 and 55 in consecutive quarters.

Biosci 54/55 will substitute for Bio 44 X/Y to satisfy the lab requirement for Biological Sciences majors, and also satisfies the "Writing in the Major" requirement. However, Biosci 54/55 is not limited to Bio majors, and there are no course prerequisites - students from different disciplines with an interest in quantitative science are welcome to apply.

The goal is to provide background and training so that students can go on to research projects in faculty labs (we'll help to find the right lab for you too!).

Want more information? See the Biosci 54/55 web page.

The deadline for application for the 2005-2006 school year is November 1.

Biosci 103

Biosci 103 will be offered the Autumn quarter of the 2005-2006 academic year.

The Biological Sciences department has a weekly research seminar series in which leading scientists from other universities visit for a day and give a talk about the latest results from their labs. The Biosci 103 course is based on this seminar series. The course will meet three times a week: on Wednesdays we will discuss the experimental methods used in the research of the upcoming speaker; on Fridays we will discuss a research paper published by the speaker; on Monday we will join the Biological Sciences department in attending the seminar. The pre-seminar meeting times are Wednesday and Friday from 2:15 to 3:05 PM in Lokey 103. The seminar is held in Hewlett 201 at 4:15 PM and refreshments are provided. See the list of speakers for 2005.

Biosci 103 will be limited to 16 students, with preference to juniors and seniors. If you're interested in taking the course, please apply online. The deadline for application is Wednesday Sept. 21, 2005.
